If you live in Austin and haven’t met/heard of Dave, you’re not paying attention.  He’s the hardest working guy we know, and has a heart of gold.  He had two panels at this year’s SXSW, and we were able to chat with him about them.

The Fort is a lot of fun, which is probably why we went back a couple of times.  We shot this video on the first day it was open, and were treated to a great performance by We Were Promised Jetpacks.

Film Tips from the Pros

It’s always a treat to talk to filmmakers.  We had several stop by our makeshift studio at ME-TV to talk about their films, and took the opportunity to ask them for some tips for our Docubloggin’ audience.

Venice is Sinking performs Bardstown Road (@veniceissinking)

The Athens, Georgia band had just arrived in Austin the night before after a long car ride across the United States.  They showed up hungry and tired, made more so by having to carry all of their equipment up three stories of stairs, but after eating some of our granola and swag Zone Perfect Bars, they performed an amazing mini-set for us.  Check these guys out!

Convention Center Fire Alarm

We were set up on the 4th floor balcony of the Austin Convention Center with a beautiful sunset view of downtown Austin.  We were waiting to conduct an interview when we heard the alarms and had to evacuate.  Now, what kind of Docublogger would I be if I didn’t record the situation as it unfolded?

Virginia interviewed Dr. Watkins about his book and research on how young people engage with technology, and how social media is changing the way that people network and connect in every day life.

ScreenBurn Arcade

SXSW brings so much attention to Austin, and ScreenBurn focuses on the gaming industry.  The arcade was very entertaining, and we had the chance to talk with some folks from Austin Community College’s Game Development Institute.

Local Austin musician Fulton Read organized some flashmobs for SXSW, and shared this one with us.  Very cool!

On the Other Side of Life

Documentaries have a way of bringing stories to the public that they might not otherwise encounter.  OTOSOL definitely delivers this.  Stefanie Brockhaus and Andy Wolff share the incredible story of two South African brothers as they navigate their tough environment, their cultural background, and the mistakes of their youth.

Hood to Coast (@HOODTOCOAST)

I love speaking with documentary filmmakers about their craft, and I was in awe when I heard what Christoph Baaden and Anna Campbell had to do to get Hood to Coast made.  Planning for helicopters and multiple camera crews didn’t stand in the way of documenting this monumental race.

We interviewed several documentary filmmakers with films at SXSW (watch the interview here), and you can look for a great segment with their advice to up-and-coming professionals in Part 3 of our Special.

This was the only red carpet we were granted access to cover, and I was pretty thrilled to be there.  I’ve been reading about the Lemmy doc for a while now, and though I had absolutely no idea what I was going to ask the man, I think everything turned out okay – even if a girl in a bikini temporarily distracted him.

Docubloggers has always been about community involvement in our productions, so we were quite please when folks answered our call for submissions for this Special.  Rideincircles shoots GREAT video, and you should check out his YouTube Channel.  And look for other great community submissions in Parts 2 and 3.

Quiet Company performs New Year’s Resolution (@quietcompanytx)

Virginia, of the Austin Girl Music Guide asked a few bands if they’d be willing to do a stripped down acoustic set for our coverage, and Quiet Company responded.  They reworked one of their songs for us, and even provided background entertainment.  One of their bandmates was stuck in traffic, so they quickly taught our assistant Wes the part, and threw him into the mix as the letter ‘E’.  It takes a lot of balls to perform in a makeshift studio environment like the one we provided, so BIG THANKS to the guys from Quiet Company!
